About this dive site

Bitter Springs, like Katherine Hot Springs, is another renowned natural thermal spring located in the Northern Territory of Australia. It's situated near the town of Mataranka, within the beautiful Elsey National Park, about 2 km from the town center. What makes Bitter Springs particularly appealing is its crystal-clear, spring-fed thermal pools set amidst a lush, palm-shaded oasis.

The water at Bitter Springs maintains a pleasant temperature of around 34 degrees Celsius year-round, making it ideal for swimming and relaxation regardless of the season, though the dry season (May to September) is generally considered the best time to visit due to milder weather. Visitors often enjoy floating down the natural stream with a pool noodle, observing the underwater world which includes turtles and various fish. The springs offer a more natural and less developed swimming experience compared to some other thermal pools in the region, with easy access via stairs and ladders and a popular walking track around the area.

However, it's important to be aware that the springs can be closed during the wet season (typically November to May) due to flooding, and visitors should always be "croc-wise" in Northern Territory waterways.

The water is relatively deep in all parts of bitter springs (cannot stand) so might not be suitable for beginners without a floating device.
