This dive site, known as Butterfly Bay 'KEYHOLE', is a serene and shallow reef formation characterized by its unique keyhole shape. Exclusively accessible to smaller vessels (maximum two at a time), it maintains a pristine and undisturbed environment. Divers can easily navigate the site, exploring vibrant coral beds within its calm confines, making it an ideal spot for relaxed exploration. There is no specific history or known story associated with the dive site.
The site boasts an impressive array of marine life, including extensive coral beds featuring beautiful blue and red staghorn corals. Divers can expect to encounter resident anemonefish, various species of butterflyfish and damselfish, and large barracuda. There is also a possibility of spotting intriguing wobbegong sharks and elegant blue spotted stingrays, adding to the excitement and diversity of the ecosystem.
Butterfly Bay 'KEYHOLE' is an excellent destination for divers of all levels due to its calm and shallow nature (average 5m, max 10m). The abundant coral life makes it particularly rewarding for macro photography enthusiasts. Snorkelers and freedivers will also find this site highly suitable given its shallow depths and vibrant marine ecosystem. The best time to visit is generally year-round, with the dry season (May to October) offering calmer seas and comfortable conditions in the Whitsundays.
