It earns its name from the distinctive, oyster-encrusted rock formations that protrude from the reef, particularly visible at lower tides.

This site is celebrated for its incredibly vibrant and accessible marine life. The coral reef here lies exceptionally close to the shore, in shallow, calm waters, making it an ideal spot for snorkelers of all skill levels, including families and beginners. As you enter the water (wearing reef shoes for protection against the rocky, sharp oyster-shelled shoreline), you're immediately immersed in a kaleidoscope of activity. Expect to see an abundance of colorful tropical fish like parrotfish, angelfish, butterflyfish, and surgeonfish, darting amongst healthy coral gardens that include diverse hard corals such as staghorn, boulder, and plate formations. With a keen eye, you might also spot turtles, various types of rays, octopus, cuttlefish, and even harmless reef sharks (like white-tips and black-tips) cruising through.

A crucial aspect of snorkeling Oyster Stacks is timing your visit with high tide (a minimum of 1.2 meters is recommended). This is essential to ensure sufficient water depth over the shallow coral, protecting the fragile ecosystem from damage and providing a safer, more enjoyable experience. The close proximity of the outer Ningaloo Reef to the shore at Oyster Stacks contributes to the high concentration of marine life, making it a truly rewarding and unforgettable snorkeling adventure.
