This dive site, Shag Rock - Sunken Reef, is a prominent exposed rocky reef located only a short 6 to 8 minute boat ride from the shore in Queensland, Australia. Renowned for its protected nature, it offers excellent diving conditions even when other sites are affected by adverse weather. Divers can explore distinct areas on both sides of the reef, which are connected by a spectacular swim-through cave, providing an engaging navigational challenge suitable for divers of all experience levels.
As a vibrant rocky reef ecosystem, Shag Rock is expected to host a diverse array of marine life. Common sightings typically include various species of colourful reef fish, potential encounters with small sharks or rays, and resident turtles. The reef's topography supports a healthy growth of hard and soft corals, anemones, and a multitude of invertebrates such as nudibranchs and crustaceans, contributing to a rich biodiversity.
The best time to visit Shag Rock is often when conditions elsewhere are unfavourable, as its sheltered location ensures reliable diving. Its maximum depth of 14 meters and average depth of 7 meters make it ideal for extended bottom times, appealing to both scuba divers and freedivers. Snorkelers will also find the site highly enjoyable due to its shallow depths and abundant marine life close to the surface, particularly around the reef and swim-through entrance.
