This dive site, Turtle Bommie, is a renowned turtle cleaning station situated approximately 10 meters off the Lady Musgrave Lagoon Wall, towards its northern end. It is an isolated bommie rising from a sand patch, providing a sanctuary where green sea and hawksbill turtles regularly gather to be cleaned by cleaner wrasse. Navigation is straightforward, simply locating the bommie on the sand patch; there is no complex history or story beyond its natural role as a cleaning station.
The primary attraction here are the graceful green sea turtles and the majestic hawksbill turtles, often seen patiently queuing for their cleaning service. Witnessing the cleaner wrasse meticulously work on the turtles is a highlight. Beyond the main stars, expect to see various reef fish inhabiting the bommie and potentially some hard and soft corals forming the bommie itself.
This shallow and calm site is ideal for visiting year-round, especially during the warmer months when marine activity is generally higher. Its accessible depth of 15 meters maximum and an average of 7 meters makes it perfect for both scuba divers and freedivers, offering ample bottom time to observe the turtle interactions. Snorkellers will also find it incredibly rewarding due to the excellent visibility and shallow nature of the bommie. Remember to maintain a respectful distance from the turtles and the cleaning process.
