This dive site Mikado, located on the south shore of Weißensee, gets its name from a unique underwater landscape. A large slope, densely covered with trees, has dramatically slid into the lake, creating a fascinating 'forest' of submerged logs and branches. This natural event shapes the underwater topography, offering divers a distinctive environment to explore by navigating around and through these woody structures.
The clear waters of Weißensee provide excellent visibility, often allowing divers to spot large fish from the surface. The site is home to the typical fish species found in the lake, which commonly include pike, perch, trout, and various cyprinids. While not a coral reef, the submerged trees offer shelter and habitat for these aquatic residents, making fish encounters frequent.
Mikado is an excellent year-round dive site, though warmer months offer more comfortable conditions. Its shallow depths and superb clarity make it highly suitable for both scuba divers and freedivers, as well as snorkelers who can appreciate the underwater scenery from the surface. The site is particularly appealing for wide-angle photography, capturing the unique 'Mikado' effect of the submerged trees.
