This dive site, North Pole Cave, is a renowned wall dive located on the southwest side of San Salvador island in the Bahamas. It's named for a distinctive “chimney” or large crack in the wall, which divers can explore. Navigation primarily involves following the impressive wall, allowing divers to appreciate the dramatic drop-off and unique geological features.
The dive is highlighted by an abundance of vibrant tube coral, which adorns the wall and crevices. Divers can expect to encounter a variety of Caribbean reef fish such as snapper, grouper, parrotfish, and angelfish. Depending on the season and luck, sightings of barracuda, reef sharks, stingrays, and sea turtles are also possible, making it a lively marine environment.
The best time to visit San Salvador for diving is generally year-round, with consistently warm water and excellent visibility. Highlights include traversing the magnificent wall and exploring the namesake chimney. For freedivers, the average depth of 14 meters and maximum depth of 29 meters offer excellent opportunities for breath-hold exploration of the wall and its features, while scuba divers can thoroughly explore deeper sections.
