About this dive site
This dive site, Maycocks - Sand Channels, is located north of the Barbados Cement Plant, offering a series of sand channels ideal for Open Water Divers (OWD), Advanced Open Water Divers (AOWD), and those who enjoy drift diving. The area benefits from some protection from harsh weather conditions typical of the north and east of the island. Navigation is straightforward, following the channels, but divers should be aware of the moderate currents. The site's history isn't specifically documented, but it's a popular spot known for its relatively undisturbed marine life.
The marine life here is typical of the west coast of Barbados. Divers can expect to see a variety of reef fish common to the region, including colorful parrotfish, angelfish, and surgeonfish. Invertebrates like sea urchins and starfish are also present. The sand channels themselves provide habitat for bottom-dwelling creatures.
The best time to visit is during the calmer months, generally from December to April, when the water is clearer and currents are less strong. Divers should always check the current conditions before diving, as they can change quickly. This dive site isn't ideal for freediving due to the moderate currents and depth.
