This dive site is the Любанский меловой карьер, a flooded chalk quarry located about 20 kilometers from the city of Lyuban in Belarus. Its most distinctive feature is the strikingly blue water, a result of calcium salts from the chalk composition. Underwater navigation is generally straightforward due to the quarry's contained nature and chalk bottom. There is no specific historical story or wreck associated with this site, rather it offers a unique geological dive experience.
Marine life in the quarry is notably sparse due to the chalky bottom providing little food base for fish. Divers might encounter perch, one of the few fish species present, and crayfish are also reported inhabitants. Vegetation is minimal, with very few plants growing in the lake.
The best time to visit this quarry for diving would likely be during the warmer months to mitigate the cold water typical of Belarusian inland sites. Divers can focus on the unique underwater landscape created by the chalk formations and the stunning blue water, making it suitable for wide-angle photography focusing on the environment. Freedivers will also find the 18-meter depth and calm conditions suitable for training and enjoying the distinct visibility.
