About this dive site

This dive site, De Gavers, is an artificial freshwater lake located in West Flanders, Belgium, near Harelbeke and Deerlijk. It was formed in the 1960s due to sand mining operations for the construction of the E17 freeway. Underwater, divers can explore artificial structures including a sunken sailing yacht and a truck cabin, providing points of interest in the otherwise sandy and silty lakebed.
The lake's ecosystem supports various freshwater species such as perch, pike, bream carp, roach, and freshwater crayfish. While not a vibrant coral reef, it offers a glimpse into the local aquatic fauna of a Belgian inland waterway.
The best time to visit De Gavers is typically during the warmer months from late spring to early autumn, when the water temperature is more inviting for diving. With its shallow maximum depth and generally mild conditions, De Gavers is an excellent site for beginner divers, training, freediving, and snorkeling, offering a local freshwater experience.
