This dive site, Wayaka (5), is a remote and unspoilt gem located within the Washington Slagbaai National Park in Bonaire. Access is a significant part of its unique character, requiring a 4WD vehicle, especially after rainfall, which limits visitor numbers and helps preserve its pristine condition. Due to minimal diving activity, the reef remains largely untouched, offering a truly natural Caribbean diving experience without complex navigation.
Divers can anticipate a vibrant display of typical Caribbean marine life. The site is notable for larger pelagic encounters, including nurse sharks, reef sharks, and the potential to spot majestic eagle rays and stingrays. The reef teems with an abundance of fish species such as snapper, angelfish, grunts, and parrotfish, indicating a healthy and thriving ecosystem with diverse coral formations.
The unspoilt nature of Wayaka is its main highlight, offering a rare opportunity to explore a less-frequented Bonaire reef. The best time to visit would be during Bonaire's dry season to ensure easier 4WD access through the national park. Divers should be prepared for a remote shore entry and bring all necessary gear. Its shallow average depth of 11 meters also makes it highly suitable for freedivers and snorkelers seeking rich marine biodiversity close to the surface, despite the challenging access.
