About this dive site

This dive site, Saco do Engenho in Arvoredo, Brazil, offers a diverse underwater experience within a relatively shallow depth range. Navigation is straightforward, mainly involving exploration of a stone and sand bottom with a prominent cave system featuring two large halls. The cave, a key attraction, is accessible to divers of moderate experience and provides an opportunity to observe large groupers and other cave-dwelling species. A separate area offers chances to encounter pelagic fish.

Marine life is abundant and varied. Divers can expect to see turtles, lobsters, octopuses, salema (sarcastic fringehead), groupers, stingrays, moray eels, kangaroo (likely referring to a type of fish), eye of the ox (possibly a species of fish), royal friar (likely a type of fish), and seahorses. The bottom composition provides habitat for a rich diversity of smaller creatures perfect for macro photography.

The best time to visit is likely during the warmer months (October to April) when visibility is generally better and water temperatures are more pleasant. For freedivers, the shallow depths make it an ideal location for breath-hold diving, focusing on exploration of the shallow reefs and seeking out smaller marine life. Divers should be aware of the cave environment and maintain safe diving practices.
