About this dive site

This dive site is located in the extreme north of an unnamed island in the Sea of Outside, Brazil. The dive starts with a drift along a wall of collapsed rocks, which creates a fascinating and ever-changing underwater landscape. The current, which is always present, guides divers along this wall before leading to a plateau rich in algae. This area, though relatively shallower, creates a dramatic contrast with the deeper wall section. Navigation is largely dictated by the current, so good buoyancy control and experience with drift diving are essential.

The marine life here is abundant and varied. Schools of mackerel, horse mackerel, shrimp, anchovies, and nail rays are commonly seen, offering plenty of opportunities for both wide-angle and macro photography. The famous Eel Garden is a highlight, but the site also boasts occasional sightings of nurse sharks and lemon sharks. The algae on the plateau supports a rich diversity of smaller invertebrates.

The best time to visit Macaxeira is likely during the warmer months, when visibility tends to be at its best. The currents are always present, making this a drift dive only suitable for certified divers with experience in managing currents. Freediving is strongly discouraged due to the depth, strong current, and unpredictable nature of the site. Divers should always check weather and sea conditions before embarking on a dive here, paying special attention to current forecasts.
