About this dive site

This dive site explores the wreck of the Itapagé, a ship that tragically sank after being hit by two torpedoes from the German submarine U-161 while escorting the Rio de Janeiro ship. The wreck rests on its starboard side, with many structural components still identifiable. A key highlight for divers is navigating through the impressive passage located between the ship's two massive engines, offering a unique wreck penetration experience.

As an established artificial reef, the Itapagé wreck has become a vibrant ecosystem, attracting a significant concentration of marine life. Divers can expect to encounter numerous species of fish, various types of rays, and several sea turtles. The site is also known for occasional sightings of sharks, adding an exciting element to the dive.

The wreck of the Itapagé offers a rewarding experience for divers interested in historical wrecks and diverse marine encounters. While no specific season is mentioned, generally calm conditions would be ideal for exploring the wreck. Freedivers can also enjoy the site's manageable depth of 21 meters, exploring the exterior and the engine passage on breath-hold. Good buoyancy control is recommended for all divers navigating the wreck.
