This dive site, Praia Vermelha - Costão do Morro da Babilônia, is a shore dive situated along the rocky wall on the right side of Praia Vermelha in Rio de Janeiro. Divers commence their exploration from the beach, navigating along the rocky wall away from the main beach area until they reach the initial inlet. There is no specific historical background or detailed navigation beyond following the natural topography.
The underwater environment is rich with various species of fish, including colorful pufferfish, coyos, and friars. The site is particularly noted for its numerous sea urchins, which require caution. Encounters with larger marine life like turtles and octopuses are also common, adding to the diversity of observations.
This shallow and accessible site is highly suitable for beginner divers and offers excellent snorkeling opportunities. Given the prevalence of sea urchins, careful buoyancy control and robust foot protection are strongly advised. While no specific best season is mentioned, generally calm sea conditions will offer the most rewarding experience for both divers and freedivers.
