This dive site, Furna de Rosa, literally translating to 'Deep cavity; Cave of the garden', is a renowned underwater cavern celebrated for its vibrant coral formations, particularly at its entrance. The cave itself boasts impressive dimensions, measuring approximately 8 meters high, 10 meters wide, and 16 meters long, with an internal maximum depth of 10 meters. It holds the distinction of being the only known easy-access cavity on the island, allowing divers to navigate comfortably and exit effortlessly, making it an excellent site for safe cavern exploration.
The 'Rosa' in its name is a direct reference to the magnificent garden of multicolored corals that extensively adorn the cave's surroundings and entrance. While the site is not primarily known for large pelagic encounters, the thriving coral ecosystem provides a rich habitat for a diverse array of reef fish, various crustaceans, and other fascinating small marine invertebrates. Divers can anticipate encountering numerous colorful fish species that shelter among the vibrant corals and within the cave's many nooks and crannies.
The optimal time to explore Furna de Rosa generally aligns with Cabo Verde's main diving season, favoring periods with calmer seas and excellent visibility, typically avoiding the strongest wind months. With a shallow maximum depth of 16 meters and an easily navigable cave system, this site is perfectly suited for scuba divers of all experience levels, including beginners, as well as freedivers. Freedivers, in particular, will find the manageable depths and the striking beauty of the coral-rich cave entrance to be a truly rewarding breath-hold experience.
