This dive site, Ponta Nho Jon (Deep), is located about 7.5 km and a 10-15 minute boat ride from Porto Grande in Cabo Verde. It is renowned as one of the best dive sites on the island, characterized by its dynamic underwater topography which includes a significant pinnacle at 27 meters adorned with corals. While this specific spot has a maximum depth of 24 meters, the broader area can reach depths exceeding 50 meters, often experiencing constant and sometimes very strong currents, making it an exhilarating dive for experienced divers.
The site is exceptionally rich in pelagic species, attracting various large marine life. Divers frequently encounter majestic Manta Rays and impressive barracudas. The vibrant reef also hosts unique macro life, most notably giant frogfish, alongside diverse small schools of fish and healthy coral formations on the pinnacle and surrounding structures.
Due to the presence of constant, often strong currents, Ponta Nho Jon is best suited for advanced divers with experience in drift diving. It offers fantastic wide-angle photography opportunities with its pelagic visitors and dramatic underwater landscapes. While the exact best time to visit for specific animal sightings isn't detailed, the consistent currents likely contribute to year-round pelagic activity. Freedivers might find the conditions challenging due to the strong currents.
