About this dive site

This dive site is the wreck of the SS Marcar, a Liberty Ship sunk in 1968 in São Vicente Bay, Cabo Verde. The wreck lies at a maximum depth of 15 meters, making it easily navigable for divers of all experience levels, especially beginners. The ship is relatively intact, providing ample opportunity to explore its various compartments and decks, and is home to a diverse marine ecosystem. The bow area is particularly noted for its high concentration of small fish, making it ideal for underwater photography.

Marine life is abundant around the SS Marcar. Schools of small fish are a common sight, especially at the bow. Rays are frequently encountered, along with exceptionally colored frogfish. Other smaller fish species and potentially invertebrate life are also present, adding to the overall biodiversity. Divers will find plenty of opportunities for both macro and wide-angle photography.

The best time to visit the SS Marcar is during the dry season (October to May), when visibility is typically better and the sea is calmer. The warmer water temperatures during these months also contribute to a more comfortable dive. Divers should always check local weather conditions before heading out, and ensure they have adequate dive gear and appropriate buoyancy control given the shallow nature of the wreck. For freedivers, the shallow depth and calm conditions make it an ideal site for exploration, allowing for longer bottom times.
