This dive site, Arachne Reef, is an advanced diving location situated between Swartz Bay and Turn Point Lighthouse on the British Columbia side of Canada. It is well-known for its moderate to heavy currents, which necessitate careful planning and significant experience for safe navigation. There is no specific historical background provided for the reef, but its challenging conditions make it a rewarding site for seasoned divers.
Divers at Arachne Reef can expect to observe a diverse array of typical cold water Pacific marine species. The reef is home to colorful anemones, delicate tube worms, various types of crabs, and abundant abalone and urchins. Among the larger marine life, ling cod and cabezon are commonly sighted, making their homes within the reef's rugged structures.
Given the strong currents, the best time to dive Arachne Reef is often during slack tide to maximize bottom time and reduce drift. Experienced divers, however, may enjoy drift diving during active tides if properly equipped and trained. Due to the cold water temperatures, appropriate dry suit or thick wet suit protection is essential. This site is not recommended for snorkeling or freediving due to its depth and challenging current conditions.
