About this dive site
This dive site presents the wreck of the Sweepstakes, a schooner that sank in September 1885 off Cove Island near Tobermory, Ontario. The vessel was originally transporting coal and was towed to Big Tub Harbour after sustaining damage in August 1885. The wreck is remarkably well-preserved; much of the hull, deck, centerboard, windlass, and some railing remains intact. Divers can safely access the hold, although Parks Canada has installed barriers to protect this fragile site from disturbance. The water surrounding the wreck is typically shallow, clear, and sheltered, offering relatively calm conditions compared to other dive locations. This makes it an excellent choice for a rewarding exploration of a historic shipwreck.
