About this dive site

This dive site is known as the smallest and shallowest of Rarotonga's passages, frequently experiencing very strong currents. Recently dredged to accommodate smaller vessels and cruise ship tenders, it offers a dynamic diving experience. Divers can explore various canyons and swim-throughs on the outer reef, navigating the unique topography shaped by the powerful water flow.

Marine life commonly encountered at Arorangi Passage includes lion fish, which can often be found hiding in crevices, and various reef sharks patrolling the currents. The passage also supports a healthy array of tropical reef fish and corals adapted to the high-energy environment, though specific species beyond those mentioned are typical for the region.

The best time to visit for diving is generally during the dry season from May to October, when weather conditions are most stable, though the strong currents are a constant feature. This site is exclusively recommended for experienced advanced divers due to the challenging current conditions. Divers should plan their dives carefully, ideally with local guides familiar with the passage's dynamics, to fully appreciate its unique features safely.
