About this dive site

This dive site, Avatiu Drop Off, is situated just west of Avatiu Harbour in the Cook Islands. It is characterized by a distinctive drop-off that begins around 18 meters, extending into what is described as the 'Abyss'. While the feature itself ranges to 40m, the accessible maximum depth for recreational diving is 19 meters, with an average depth of approximately 9 meters, making it suitable for divers of various experience levels.

Fish life is notably abundant and very good in the shallows of this site. Divers exploring the edge of the drop-off have a good chance to encounter larger predators, indicating a healthy ecosystem. Common reef fish are plentiful, offering vibrant displays of marine activity.

The Avatiu Drop Off is ideal for both scuba divers and freedivers, with its accessible shallow areas perfect for snorkeling. The best time to visit the Cook Islands for diving is generally during the drier and cooler months from May to October, offering calm seas and excellent visibility. Divers should be mindful of potential moderate currents, especially along the drop-off, which often attract bigger marine species.
