About this dive site

This dive site, known as Goldmine, is conveniently located directly in front of “The Goldmine” jewellery shop in Rarotonga town. The reef is characterized by impressive large coral bommies, offering an intriguing underwater landscape with numerous overhangs and crevices that invite exploration. With depths ranging from 15 to 25 meters, and an average depth of approximately 10 meters, it is an accessible site for various diving proficiencies. While no specific history or story behind its name is provided beyond its proximity to the shop, the site’s natural topography provides ample features for easy navigation. Divers can expect to encounter a vibrant array of marine life at Goldmine. Common sightings include fascinating scorpion fish, various species of moray eels hidden within the reef, colorful trigger fish, schools of trevallys, and charming pufferfish. The area is also particularly favored by turtles, making it a good spot for observing these graceful creatures in their natural habitat. The healthy coral bommies support this diverse ecosystem, providing both shelter and food sources. Goldmine is suitable for diving year-round, typical of the Cook Islands' tropical climate, though the drier season (May to October) generally offers calmer seas and optimal visibility. Its moderate depth makes it an excellent choice for beginner divers to gain experience, while experienced divers will appreciate the intricate reef structure and macro opportunities within the overhangs. Freedivers will also find the average depth of 10 meters and varied marine life appealing, making it a versatile site for underwater exploration.
