About this dive site
This dive site, Matavera Point, is situated north of Matavera Wall in the Cook Islands, specifically off Rarotonga. It can be explored as a standalone deep dive or combined with the adjacent Matavera Wall. The site is characterized by a reef plateau at approximately 20 meters depth that extends into the open blue, forming a distinctive corner where strong currents converge. From this plateau, a dramatic vertical wall plunges into the abyss, offering a truly breathtaking underwater landscape.
The marine life at Matavera Point is exceptionally prolific. Upon descending the vertical wall, divers are immediately greeted by massive schools of fusiliers and damsels, swirling in the currents. Beyond these impressive schools, a diverse array of other reef fish species can be observed, thriving in the nutrient-rich waters brought by the converging currents. While specific coral types aren't detailed, the healthy reef ecosystem implies vibrant coral growth.
The best time to visit Matavera Point, and the Cook Islands in general, is typically during the dry season from May to October, when water conditions are calmest and visibility is at its peak. Due to the presence of converging currents and the deep vertical wall, this site is best suited for advanced divers comfortable with drift diving and navigating in currents. Freedivers will also find the dramatic drop-off and potential for pelagic encounters highly appealing, offering opportunities for deep exploration along the wall.
