About this dive site

This dive site, traditionally known as Avaiti, is a shallow and short passage dive located on the south coast of Rarotonga, Cook Islands. Divers begin on the outer coral reef and drift through the passage into the calm lagoon. The topography is characterized by steep walls, captivating swim-throughs, and beautifully lit shallow caverns, creating a truly unique and engaging underwater experience. Papua Passage is renowned for its vibrant marine life. Divers frequently encounter green turtles and the graceful whitetip reef sharks patrolling the passage. A notable resident is the giant star puffer fish, which is often spotted here. The strong currents, while a characteristic feature, contribute significantly to an enriched abundance and diversity of fish life. The best time to visit Papua Passage for optimal marine life viewing is often when currents are present, as this enhances fish activity. Due to the potential for strong currents, it is advisable for divers to be comfortable with drift diving. Its shallow average depth of 8 meters and clear waters make it an excellent choice for both snorkelers and freedivers, offering opportunities to observe the passage's unique features and marine inhabitants from the surface or with breath-hold dives.
