About this dive site

This dive site, Tupapa Sandriver, is located off the coast of Rarotonga in the Cook Islands. It is characterized by a prominent sand channel flanked by vibrant coral reefs. The channel originates in the surf zone and descends gracefully towards a dramatic drop-off. Divers can navigate the channel, observing a very steep wall on its northern side and a more gradually sloping reef on the southern side, leading into the abyss. There is no specific history or story provided for this site. The site boasts healthy coral formations and a rich abundance of fish life. It is particularly noted for common reef predators, with frequent sightings of reef sharks, especially when exploring the deeper sections of the site. A diverse array of smaller reef fish and invertebrates can also be found amongst the corals. The Cook Islands generally offer good diving year-round, with the dry season (May to October) often providing the best conditions. For divers, practicing good buoyancy control is essential due to the steep wall and potential variable currents in the channel. Freedivers will find the depths (up to 24m, with deeper sections available) and the chance to encounter sharks appealing, making it a rewarding location for breath-hold diving.
