This dive site, Alcyone, is a renowned underwater mountain located off Cocos Island, famous for its spectacular pelagic encounters. Divers typically initiate their descent along a rope due to the consistently strong to very strong currents present at the site. As a submerged seamount, Alcyone acts as a magnet for marine life in the open ocean, offering a truly unique and thrilling dive experience. There isn't extensive historical information beyond its reputation as a world-class diving destination.
Alcyone is celebrated for its abundant marine animals, primarily large pelagic species. Divers frequently encounter immense schools of hammerhead sharks, often numbering between 150 to 200 individuals. Dolphins and Galapagos sharks are also common sightings, adding to the excitement. Additionally, large marble rays are a constant presence at this site, alongside various other reef and pelagic fish species that thrive in the nutrient-rich waters surrounding the seamount.
Alcyone is considered a dive site that is always worth visiting, with peak shark activity often observed during the wet season (June to November), although excellent encounters can occur year-round. Due to the very strong currents, the required rope descent, and the depths involved, this site is strictly for advanced divers who possess excellent buoyancy control, experience with strong currents, and comfort in challenging underwater environments. It is not suitable for snorkeling, and the demanding conditions also make it inappropriate for general freediving.
