This dive site, known as 12 Foot Ledge, is an artificial reef standing 12 feet high, stretching for approximately one mile as a distinctive underwater ridge. It's an exceptionally easy dive, ideal for navigation by simply following the contours of the wall. The site's history as an artificial structure contributes to its vibrant ecosystem, providing shelter and a foundation for marine growth.
Divers can expect to encounter abundant marine life typical of Caribbean reefs, including various species of colorful reef fish like parrotfish, angelfish, triggerfish, and sergeant majors. Moray eels and barracuda are also common residents. The ledge is adorned with a good number of healthy hard and soft corals, alongside sponges and gorgonians, providing a rich habitat for smaller critters.
The 12 Foot Ledge is suitable for diving year-round, though visibility can vary. The best time to visit for optimal conditions generally aligns with Dominica's dry season, from February to May. Its shallow average depth of 9 meters and maximum depth of 18 meters make it perfect for beginners, snorkelers, and freedivers seeking an easy and rewarding experience with plenty of marine activity and an interesting underwater topography.
