This dive site, Guaraguao, is a fairly shallow reef located within Parque Nacional Del Este, reaching a maximum depth of 15 meters (40 feet). It is a unique artificial archeological site where historical artifacts such as cannons, cannonballs, and ancient muskets, salvaged from a sunken galley, have been strategically placed for divers to explore. Its gentle conditions and clear layout make it an excellent choice for beginning divers and snorkelers, offering an easy and historically rich underwater experience.
The site is home to typical vibrant Caribbean marine life. Divers can expect to encounter nurse and reef sharks, possible eagle rays, sea turtles, and stingrays gracefully moving through the waters. The reef also teems with an abundance of fish species, including colorful snapper, angelfish, grunts, parrotfish, and grouper, creating a lively and diverse ecosystem.
The best time to visit Guaraguao is generally during the Dominican Republic's dry season, typically from December to May, when sea conditions are calm and visibility is optimal. Its shallow depth allows for extended bottom times, making it ideal for underwater photography and leisurely exploration. Freedivers will find the accessible depths and rich marine biodiversity particularly appealing.
