About this dive site

This dive site marks the location of the Giannis D, a cargo ship that tragically sank in April 1983. The vessel was en route from Rijeka, Croatia, carrying sawn timber destined for Saudi Arabia and Yemen, when it encountered difficulties near the Straits of Gobal. At full speed, the ship suddenly veered off course and struck the north-west corner of Sha’ab Abu Nuhas Reef. All crew members were safely rescued after abandoning the vessel. The wreck now offers a fascinating dive experience, with its cargo of timber providing an intriguing subject for underwater exploration. Visibility can vary depending on conditions, but is generally considered good. The site presents a unique challenge due to the presence of the wreck itself and potential currents around the reef.
