About this dive site
This dive site, Big Brother South, is a thrilling plateau extending from the southern tip of Big Brother Island in Egypt. It begins around 30 meters and stretches south for approximately 500 meters, reaching a depth of 60 meters at its southernmost point. The plateau itself is about 20 meters wide, dropping dramatically to over 80 meters on either side. Divers must be aware of the often strong current flowing from the north, which can make returning against the current challenging. Careful planning and experienced dive guides are essential for a safe and successful dive.
The abundant marine life makes this site particularly attractive. Divers can expect to see a variety of large pelagic species, including thresher sharks, large tuna, giant trevally, napoleon wrasse, and various shark species like oceanic white tips, silky sharks, and grey reef sharks. While the smaller reef fish and invertebrates might be less abundant compared to shallower reefs, they're certainly present. The overall biodiversity is notable due to the diverse habitats on offer.
The best time to visit is during the warmer months, typically from April to November, when visibility is usually best and the water temperature is more comfortable. Strong currents are a frequent occurrence here, so advanced training and appropriate experience are crucial. This dive is not suitable for beginners or inexperienced divers, and it's recommended that freediving is not attempted due to depth and currents. Careful planning and an experienced guide are key to a safe and rewarding dive experience.
