About this dive site

This dive site, El Shugarath, is located approximately 14km south of Dahab, Egypt, and is accessible by a 50-minute boat ride. Divers typically navigate in a northerly direction, starting on a sandy plateau that descends steeply from 20 meters. The main attraction is a canyon that extends from 20 to 50 meters, offering a dramatic underwater landscape. Beyond the canyon, a vibrant forest of giant gorgonians awaits, teeming with marine life.

The diverse marine life at El Shugarath includes longnose hawkfish nestled within the gorgonians, colorful nudibranchs, elusive octopus, and larger pelagic species such as barracudas, snappers, and fusiliers. Turtles, tunas, and mackerel are also frequently sighted, offering exciting encounters for divers of all skill levels.

The best time to visit El Shugarath is during the warmer months (spring and fall), when visibility is typically excellent and the water temperature is most comfortable. Divers should be aware of the moderate to strong currents, especially in the canyon and around the gorgonian forest. A dive guide is recommended for those less experienced with current-influenced dives. Freediving is not recommended at this site due to the depth and potential current.
