About this dive site

This dive site is located at Ras Za'atar, the most northern dive site of Ras Mohamed National Park in Egypt. It marks the southern entrance to the bay of Mersa Bareika, where a dramatic steep wall meets a gentler sloping seabed. The dive typically begins by following the wall northwards, navigating through a series of impressive overhangs and dark gullies. This wall is beautifully adorned with a variety of sea fans, gorgonians, and occasional black coral. The wall's topography provides a captivating backdrop for exploration and offers a mixture of diverse habitats to explore.

Marine life is abundant at Ras Za'atar. Divers can expect to encounter a wide variety of colorful reef fish, including angelfish, butterflyfish, and parrotfish. The area is also known for its diverse coral formations, and the colorful heads provide important habitat for a wide range of invertebrates and smaller fish. Depending on the season, larger pelagic species may also be seen.

The best time to visit Ras Za'atar is during the warmer months (April to October), when water temperatures are more comfortable and visibility is typically at its best. However, bear in mind that currents can be stronger during this time. Divers should have at least an intermediate level of experience to navigate the currents, underwater topography, and potential for deeper dives. For divers and freedivers, it's important to check the weather conditions, current strength, and visibility reports before entering the water and to always dive with a buddy.
