About this dive site

This dive site, Um Khararim (Cave Reef), is located between St. John's and Sernaka in Egypt. It's characterized by impressive, light-flooded caves and a beautiful coral garden situated at a depth of 6-10 meters. Divers typically enter in a north-easterly direction to reach the coral garden and return to the boat keeping the reef on their right, making navigation relatively straightforward. The site's popularity among liveaboards attests to its appeal.

The marine life at Um Khararim is diverse. The coral garden teems with a variety of colorful fish species, including reef fish common to the Red Sea. The caves themselves may harbor shy creatures such as crustaceans and smaller fish. While larger pelagic animals might not be consistently present, the possibility of encountering them adds to the site's allure.

The best time to visit Um Khararim is during the warmer months, typically from April to October, when the water temperature is most comfortable and visibility is generally excellent. For freedivers, the shallower sections of the coral garden offer opportunities for longer dives, while the caves present a unique challenge. Divers should always adhere to safe diving practices, especially when exploring the caves and pay attention to navigation to avoid getting lost in the caves.
