About this dive site

This dive site, Grotte à Corail, Lion de Mer, is located near Fréjus in the French Riviera. The dive involves navigating to a rocky cliff face before entering a captivating grotto. The underwater landscape is dominated by the grotto itself, a unique and stunning feature filled with gorgonians and red coral. This dive may be combined with a visit to the nearby 'Voilier' wreck, adding an extra element of exploration and challenge for experienced divers.

Marine life is abundant within the grotto and surrounding area. Divers can expect to encounter a variety of species including groupers, moray eels, conger eels, numerous crustaceans, sea snails (nudibranchs), and the striking Mediterranean red coral. The diverse ecosystem supports a significant population of smaller invertebrates, making it ideal for macro photography.

The best time to visit is during the warmer months (June to September) when water temperatures are more comfortable and visibility is typically at its best. Divers should be aware of potential currents, particularly around the grotto entrance and near the wreck, and maintain proper buoyancy control within the cave to avoid damaging the delicate coral formations. Freediving at this location is not recommended due to the depth and potential currents.
