About this dive site

This dive site is the wreck of the Le Bananier, a cargo ship built in 1934 that transported fruit between French colonies and the ports of Bordeaux and Nantes for five years. Now resting on the Catalan coast, it's considered one of the most beautiful wrecks in the Mediterranean, lying at a maximum depth of 40 meters. Navigation involves careful descent and ascent, respecting decompression stops, and awareness of potential currents. The wreck itself provides a fascinating exploration, with numerous entry and penetration points (appropriate training and experience are vital).

The wreck is teeming with marine life. Groupers, anthias, catfish, and moray eels are common sights, along with a variety of other fish species and invertebrates that have colonized the structure. The fixed fauna adds to the richness of the ecosystem, demonstrating a healthy, established habitat.

The best time to visit is during the warmer months (May to October) when water temperatures are more pleasant and visibility is typically best. Experienced divers and those comfortable with wreck penetration should find this a rewarding dive. Strong currents can sometimes be present, so appropriate training and certification levels are essential. Freediving is not recommended due to the depth and potential currents.
