About this dive site

The site is a large, shallow sandbank located in the middle of Moorea's crystalline lagoon, on the northwestern side of the island. The water here is incredibly clear and turquoise, often chest-deep, making it easily accessible for people of all swimming abilities.

Visitors can get into the water to swim and snorkel alongside dozens of friendly stingrays and blacktip reef sharks. While the site is a natural habitat, it has become a popular spot for guided tours that often include a feeding session.

The stingrays are a major highlight. They are known for being very docile and "cuddly," often swimming right up to visitors and even allowing themselves to be gently touched. During feeding sessions, they can be seen gracefully gliding and even "eating" from a person's hand.

The site is home to many blacktip reef sharks. Visitors consistently report that the sharks are not aggressive and are more curious and timid than intimidating. They swim peacefully in the area, providing a truly awe-inspiring sight. There are two main ways to experience this site.

  1. Guided Tours: This is the most popular and recommended option. Numerous tour operators in Moorea offer lagoon tours that make a stop at the sandbank. These tours typically include a boat ride, knowledgeable guides who provide safety instructions and information about the animals, and often other activities like a motu (small islet) picnic or additional snorkeling stops.

  2. Independent Access: It is also possible to reach the site by renting a kayak or paddleboard from nearby hotels or rental shops. You can enter from Hotel Les Tipaniers to the beach where the jetty is, and there you'll see a shop who rents kayaks at a very cheap price.
