This dive site, Bornhorster See, locally known as “Borni,” is an artificial lake in Germany, originally excavated for motorway construction. It serves as a multi-purpose recreational area for fishing, bathing, and diving. Access is straightforward, with a car park leading to a roughly 100-meter forest path that takes divers to one of the entry points. As a lake environment, navigation is typically simple, following the contours of the basin.
The lake's ecosystem supports various freshwater species. Divers can expect to encounter a range of fish including eels, perch, pike, carp, roach, and pike-perch. Crayfish are also noted inhabitants, offering opportunities for macro observations. Above the surface, great crested grebes are often seen on the lake.
Bornhorster See is suitable year-round, though colder temperatures in winter will require appropriate dry suit gear. It's an excellent training ground for beginners due to its shallow depths and calm conditions. Freedivers can also utilize its clear, calm waters for breath-hold practice. Visibility ranges from 3-5 meters, which means divers should manage expectations and focus on the diverse freshwater life within this intimate lake environment.
