This dive site, Hunsfels (Dive Site 1), is part of a larger, five-hectare lake in Germany, which was formerly a lime mine active until six years ago. This transformation has created a "dreamlike lake" reaching depths of up to 54 meters in its entirety, though Hunsfels itself has a maximum depth of 22 meters and an average of 11 meters. The overall lake offers five distinct dive spots, with Hunsfels providing a diverse underwater experience.
The shallow areas of Hunsfels are richly overgrown with various water plants, creating an ideal habitat for all kinds of young fish species, including perch, pike-perch, and trout. These vibrant ecosystems contribute significantly to the site's appeal, making it a great location for observing freshwater marine life.
With fantastic visibility often exceeding 10 meters, Hunsfels is an excellent site for both divers and freedivers. The shallow, vegetated areas are ideal for training and exploring the aquatic flora and fauna, while the deeper sections offer more to discover. The site is suitable for year-round diving, although considerations for cold water, especially outside warmer months, are important for comfort and safety.
