This dive site, Murner See Holzturm, is located at the northern shore of the Murner See, a lake formed from a former brown coal open pit mine in Germany. Divers enter near the "Holzturm" (Wooden Tower) and can explore a 20-meter stepped mining platform to the left, which hosts various small "sights" above 10 meters. For deeper exploration, a rope leads directly from the entrance into the depths, assisting with navigation in this unique artificial environment.
Due to the acidic water conditions resulting from its lignite open-cast mining origins, the marine fauna at Murner See is somewhat limited. Divers can expect to encounter scattered perch, and occasionally a pike. A notable inhabitant is at least one large catfish, which is a particular point of interest for divers to try and spot. The underwater environment primarily features submerged mining structures rather than abundant plant life.
The best time to visit Murner See for diving is typically during the warmer months from late spring to early autumn, when surface temperatures are more comfortable, although specific highlights are not seasonal. Divers should be prepared for cold water, common in German lakes, and utilize appropriate dry or thick wetsuits. The site is suitable for both recreational divers, freedivers, and snorkelers due to its moderate depth and interesting features above 10 meters.
