This dive site, Riff Nienhagen, is a natural reef located approximately 1.5 km north of the Baltic Sea resort of Nienhagen and about 8 km west of Warnemünde, Germany. Situated in the southwestern part of a Fisheries Protection Area, the reef is found at depths ranging from 5 to 10 meters. It offers a relatively shallow and accessible underwater environment for exploring the unique ecosystem of the Baltic Sea.
Divers can expect to encounter a variety of typical Baltic Sea marine life. Common sightings include various species of Gobies, cod, rockfish, and flatfish. The reef is also home to invertebrates such as mussels, starfish, and rock shrimp. Whiting and golden maiden are also present, and notably, the spotted wrasse has been observed here since 2019, adding a special highlight to the local fauna.
The best time to visit Riff Nienhagen is generally during the warmer summer months when water temperatures are more hospitable, although the Baltic Sea is known for its cool waters requiring appropriate exposure protection. Its shallow depths make it ideal for beginners, freedivers, and snorkelers. Divers should be aware of potential boat traffic in the area, as it is part of a fisheries protection zone. It's an excellent site for macro photography enthusiasts due to the abundance of smaller marine life.
