About this dive site

This dive site, the Santorini Caves, is located near the ancient city of Akrotiri, a short boat ride from the Caldera Beach harbor. These fascinating caves, formed by volcanic activity during Santorini's explosive past, offer a unique underwater landscape. Navigating the caves requires careful attention to buoyancy and awareness of potential low-visibility areas. The unique lava formations create stunning backdrops for underwater photography.

The marine life within and around the caves is diverse, and you'll observe a variety of fish. Moray eels, amberjacks, groupers, and even octopuses are residents of this area, along with a rich abundance of smaller macro life making it ideal for macro photography enthusiasts. The rocky structures and caverns support a healthy ecosystem, making for diverse encounters.

The best time to visit is during the summer months (June to September), when the water is calm and visibility is at its best. For freedivers, the relatively shallow depths and generally mild currents make it an ideal location for breath-hold explorations. However, divers should always check local conditions and dive with a buddy, especially when exploring the caves.
