This dive site features the MV Shakem, a 200ft / 70m cargo vessel originally built in Germany in 1965. It tragically sank in 2001 to a depth of 105ft / 31m due to overloading cement intended for a resort expansion. Divers can explore the well-preserved wreck, which offers numerous penetration options for those appropriately certified and experienced in wreck diving.
The wreck has become a thriving artificial reef, providing shelter for a variety of marine life. Baitfish are commonly observed schooling around the mast, attracting larger predators such as snappers and barracuda. The concrete pallets within the cargo holds and the extensive coral growth around the stern conceal many small critters, reef fish, and crustaceans.
The MV Shakem is an excellent dive site suitable for diving year-round. While the average depth of 14 meters makes it approachable for intermediate divers exploring the exterior and shallower sections, certified advanced divers will appreciate the challenging and rewarding penetration opportunities within the vessel. Freedivers can also enjoy the shallower parts of the wreck and the abundant marine life.
