This dive site, Fish Den, is a captivating location known for its unique geological formation. Divers navigate around a distinctive coral pillar, which is ingeniously set within a square-shaped cut in the main reef wall. The pillar's top starts at about 7 meters (20 ft) and descends to 12 meters (40 ft), while the surrounding square cut gently slopes down to 18 meters (60 ft) before rejoining the main reef structure. The site offers an interesting exploration of this unusual topographical feature.
The vibrant corals are home to an abundance of marine life. Divers can expect to encounter numerous sponges and elegant sea fans adorning the reef. The site is particularly rich in small critters, offering excellent opportunities for macro photography, with sightings of lobsters, various crabs including arrow crabs, and different species of shrimp. Schooling fish are also a common sight, adding dynamism to the reef's ecosystem.
Fish Den is an excellent site to visit year-round, with generally favorable conditions typical of the Bay Islands. Its structure and diverse small marine life make it particularly rewarding for underwater photographers focusing on macro subjects. The shallower parts of the pillar and reef wall also offer fantastic opportunities for freedivers and snorkelers to explore the vibrant ecosystem without needing to descend to full depths.
