About this dive site

This dive site, Silver Gardens, is located approximately 20 minutes from Utila's main hub on the island's south side. Marked by four distinct buoys, the site begins with a shallow sandy area at around 6 meters (20ft) before gradually sloping and dropping off. While the geological feature descends deeper, recreational dives typically stay within the 19-meter maximum depth, making navigation straightforward and enjoyable. The site is known for its beautiful formations of black coral, adding a unique element to the underwater landscape.

Divers here can expect to encounter a vibrant array of marine life. The famous black coral provides a striking backdrop for sightings of large groupers and elusive green moral eels. Schools of black margates and chubs are frequently seen, creating dynamic displays, while squid dart amongst the corals. A particular highlight for many divers is the presence of graceful green sea turtles, often found grazing or resting on the reef.

Silver Gardens is an excellent dive site year-round, offering calm conditions and good visibility for most of the year, though the peak season often aligns with April to September for generally calmer seas. Its shallow average depth makes it ideal for beginners and a perfect spot for extended bottom times. Freedivers will also appreciate the varying depths and abundant marine life close to the surface, offering plenty of opportunities for breathtaking encounters.
