About this dive site
This dive site is located in Kleifarvatn Lake, the largest lake on the Reykjanes peninsula of Iceland. Reaching a maximum depth of 90 meters, it’s one of the deepest lakes in the country and situated approximately 30 kilometers outside of Reykjavík. The location is remarkably unique: Kleifarvatn sits directly atop the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, where the North American and Eurasian continental plates converge. This geological position contributes to the lake's unusual characteristics, including its constantly fluctuating water levels due to ground water changes following seismic activity – a pattern that has notably decreased since 2000 after an earthquake caused a fissure in the lake floor. The surrounding landscape is dramatic, featuring steep volcanic hills and bizarre lava formations. It’s not uncommon to feel slight vibrations underwater near recently discovered hot springs just 10 meters from the shore, creating a truly special diving experience. The lake has a long history of fishing, particularly for large brown trout and char. Local folklore even speaks of a massive serpent-like creature inhabiting its depths. While diving is possible, activity is typically paused during winter due to freezing temperatures. A nearby geothermal area, Seltún, provides further interest with its bubbling mud pots and colorful sulfur deposits. This area represents the intense geothermal activity that characterizes Iceland.
