Groupers Den

This dive site, known as Groupers Den, is an artificial reef located about 6-7 km off the coast of Pondicherry, India, requiring a 45-minute boat ride to reach. The underwater landscape is characterized by massive tree trunks standing tall, draped with nets, and secured by sandbags that define the site's perimeter at the bottom. This unique structure provides a complex habitat for marine life and offers interesting navigation opportunities around the submerged tree trunks. The site is teeming with diverse marine species, including massive Groupers, Schools of Barracuda, Batfish, Rabbit Fish, Giant Trevally, and Snappers. For macro enthusiasts, there are Long Snout Pipe Fish and various Nudibranchs to discover. Silver Moonies and other schooling fish also frequent the area, creating a vibrant underwater spectacle. Groupers Den is generally best visited during the cooler, drier months (typically October to March) when sea conditions are calmer and visibility is at its best. Its relatively shallow maximum depth of 20 meters and average depth of 10 meters make it suitable for both beginner and intermediate divers. Freedivers can also enjoy exploring the upper parts of the structures and observing the abundant fish life. Divers should be mindful of the nets covering the tree trunks, ensuring good buoyancy control.
