About this dive site

This dive site is located on the coast of Catania, Sicily, in front of Diving, featuring a volcanic rock island emerging from the sand. This site boasts exceptional biodiversity, with numerous nudibranchs, sponges, and octopuses inhabiting the lava crevices. Above the reef, you can encounter schools of groupers (Diplodus), parrotfish (Sparisoma Cretense), and fan corals (Scorpaena). For divers holding a Deep certification, further exploration is possible down to the sandy bottom where ancient Roman amphorae fragments are found, some in remarkably good condition. The cavities within these amphorae provide shelter for octopuses and moray eels (Muraenidae). On the adjacent sandy seabed, large fan coral and truffles (Mullus) can be observed. Descent begins from a bay beneath Diving, progressing to the edge of the rocky wall at approximately 15 meters, then continuing towards the island’s summit at 30 meters. Further exploration leads to the sandy bottom at 38 meters where more amphora fragments are discovered. Along this route, you may encounter remnants of old fishing nets colonized by squid eggs (Loligo Vulgaris). This dive offers frequent encounters with schools of groupers and fan corals.
