This dive site explores the U-455, a German submarine launched in 1941 for World War II service. The 67-meter-long wreck was discovered in very deep water, resting between 110-120 meters southeast of Genoa, Italy, and is believed to have been sunk by a mine in 1944. The dive to the U-455 is considered extremely challenging, requiring advanced technical diving skills and specialized equipment to safely explore its depths, even if parts of the surrounding area are accessible recreationally to 48 meters.
The entire structure of the U-455 is colonized by a very rich marine life. Divers can observe a vibrant ecosystem featuring numerous oysters, colorful anemones, and diverse micro-organisms that thickly cover every part of the submarine's hull. The wreck is often enveloped by swirling clouds of colorful anthias, adding to the visual spectacle.
While no specific best time to visit is provided, wreck diving in the Mediterranean typically offers good conditions during warmer months. Given the extreme depth and challenging nature of this dive, it is exclusively suitable for highly experienced technical divers with proper training, gas mixes, and equipment. Freediving and snorkeling are not suitable due to the significant depth.
