About this dive site

This dive site, Dream Hole, is a premier and highly popular diving spot in Manza, Okinawa, renowned for its unique geological formations and a distinctive cave feature. It boasts a dramatic drop-off topography, with the reef top starting at 5 meters and plummeting to over 40 meters. The main attraction involves a narrow, person-sized hole on the reef top that leads into a vertical cave. Divers undertake a challenging descent of approximately 25 meters through this cavern before navigating a horizontal passage of about 15 meters to an exit. This exit is famously recognized for its silhouette, which strikingly resembles the Pokémon character Pikachu, offering a memorable photographic opportunity. The marine life at Dream Hole is exceptionally vibrant and diverse, catering to both macro enthusiasts and those seeking larger reef inhabitants. Divers can expect to encounter dazzling schools of Sweepers and Glassfish, alongside colorful Purple Queen Anthias, Garden Eels, and striking Lionfish. The site is particularly famous for its unique residents such as the elusive Ribbon Eel, the intricate Banded Coral Shrimp, and the highly sought-after Pygmy Seahorse. Furthermore, various reef fish like Yellowback Damselfish and Threadfin Butterflyfish, as well as larger pelagic species including Barracuda, Bluefin Trevally, and Coral Grouper, frequent the area, enriching the underwater experience. The best time to visit Dream Hole is generally during the warmer months, typically from May to October, when water temperatures are comfortable and underwater visibility is at its peak. However, diving is feasible year-round. This site is specifically recommended for experienced divers who are proficient in advanced buoyancy control and are comfortable with confined overhead environments. While the deeper and more intricate sections of the cave are best suited for scuba diving, highly skilled freedivers may explore the shallower parts of the drop-off or the cave entrance, though full cave penetration requires advanced breath-hold capabilities due to its depth and enclosed nature.
